Community and Background:
Can you tell us a bit about your journey to the Berry community? How did you end up here and what attracted you to this community?
Four years ago, my partner Holly and I moved from Sydney to Berry with our kids, Matilda and Billy. While Covid gave us the final push, relocating had long been on our minds. I was already used to working from home one day a week, so the shift wasn’t too hard. We chose Berry because of friends, holidays, and its charm — friendly people and great coffee. Working from home can feel isolating, though, so I spend two half days a week at WorkLife Berry. It’s a welcoming space with everything I need and gives me a chance to connect with others.
Business and Entrepreneurship:
Tell us about your work. How and when did you decide to start it, and what motivated you to take the plunge into entrepreneurship or remote work?
I’ve been a journalist for 25 years, working in places like India, the Middle East, and across Australia and New Zealand. I’ve edited the Great Walks magazine and website for several years, which has taken me to many unique destinations. The web-based publishing software I use makes my work highly portable, allowing me to work from home or anywhere. I often start my day at home, then head to WorkLife in the afternoon for a change of scenery and a more social work environment.
What does work-life balance look like for you? How do you manage the demands of work while ensuring time for family and personal life?
Since I’m rarely needed at the Surry Hills office, I can be in Berry for the kids — giving lifts to footy or friends houses. I don’t work weekends and log off at five, so family comes first. I also believe in giving back, which is why I volunteer as president of my kids’ high school P&C.
In your industry, what recent disruptions or transitions have had the most significant impact on your business?
I’m a union rep at my company, and every three years we negotiate new contracts. Thankfully, the process is smooth — our company values happy, productive staff. They fully supported my move to Berry, which I really appreciated. I use AI in my work for writing and sub-editing — it’s helpful — but there’s still a big unknown around its long-term impact on jobs and society. The cat’s out of the bag, so now we need smart people to set clear, responsible boundaries around how AI is used.
Personal Life:
Outside of work, what are your hobbies and passions? How do you like to spend your time when you’re not focused on business or family?
I love the great outdoors, be it a beach walk or a bushwalk. It’s a great opportunity to talk to the kids away from their devices. I love movies and photography and I love books about movies and photography. I also love craft beer and 90s music. Am I showing my age?!
Are there any books or podcasts you’ve found particularly inspiring or informative recently? Any recommendations for the WorkLife community?
My favourite podcast is The Rewatchables — a group of film nerds revisiting old movies, which I love. For books, I recommend Great Coastal Walks Australia, my new coffee table favourite, and He Would Never, the latest novel by my partner Holly Wainwright. It’s her fifth book — and yes, it’s fantastic!
How do you maintain boundaries between work and personal life? Any top tips?
I’m lucky as my company doesn’t believe in working after hours or on weekends. I often leave my phone at home when I go out – much to the total disbelief of my teenage daughter.
Design and Lifestyle:
What is your taste like? Do you have a favourite item of furniture or object in your home? Anything that has special significance or tells a story about you?
I don’t have a personal taste to speak of. I’m pretty go-with-the-flow, but I love a big comfy couch and a big TV with surround sound!
What do you like/appreciate about the design at WorkLife? Any favourite touches or things that make you feel at home when you are at work?
I love the aesthetic and the colour – mellow yellow! Plus the local artwork. The outside workspace is also very nice.
If you were to showcase the best of the local lifestyle to visiting friends, where would you take them and why?
Drawing Room Rocks for the hike and the views. The Friendly Inn for the beer and the views. Seven Mile Beach for a swim and the views.
Productivity and Time Management:
What’s your go-to productivity hack? How do you stay organised and efficient, especially with multiple responsibilities?
I’m always on deadline and deadlines don’t move! I’m not much of a procrastinator thank God, I just get on and do what needs to be done. I do struggle a little bit with organisation, especially having a partner who is busier than me – but we’re getting there.
Benefits of WorkLife Membership:
Lastly, what’s been the most valuable aspect of being a member at WorkLife for you and your work?
The people – everyone is friendly and welcoming even when everyone is ‘head down arse up’ busy.
