What is International Coworking Day? And how WorkLife is celebrating it in 2026

The Story Behind International Coworking Day (and How You Can Bring a Friend For Free This August)

Every year on August 9th, the global flexible work community celebrates International Coworking Day.

Whether you’re a long-time WorkLife member or a curious remote worker still testing the waters from your kitchen table, this day is all about celebrating a movement that completely changed how – and where – we work.

Here is a look back at where the coworking movement started, why it has taken off worldwide, and how we’re celebrating across our WorkLife locations this August.

How Coworking Started From A Simple Blog Post

Did you know that the entire global coworking movement traces back to a single blog post published on August 9, 2005?

A software engineer named Brad Neuberg was feeling torn. He wanted the freedom and autonomy of working for himself as a freelancer, but he deeply missed the social connections, structured routine, and watercooler chats of a traditional office environment.

His fix? He published an open invitation on his blog, rented a space in San Francisco two days a week, set up a few tables, offered free Wi-Fi, and invited independent workers to come sit alongside him.

He called it “coworking” – a concept where people doing entirely different jobs could work independently, yet feel grounded by each other’s presence.

Fast forward to today, and that simple invitation has grown from a humble San Francisco experiment into a thriving worldwide community spanning over 42,000 spaces globally.

Why We Love Coworking (And Why It Works)

At WorkLife, we’ve always believed that choosing where you work shouldn’t mean choosing between two bad options: the corporate politics of a traditional office block or the isolation of working from home.

Coworking is that sweet spot in between. It gives you:

How We’re Celebrating International Coworking Day at WorkLife in 2026: Bring a Friend for FREE!

Since International Coworking Day falls on Sunday, August 9, we’re turning the celebration into a full week-long affair!

From Monday, August 10 through Friday, August 14, all WorkLife members are invited to bring a friend, colleague, or work buddy to cowork with them for FREE.

Whether you have a freelancing mate who’s been suffering from home-office fatigue, a partner who needs a quiet space for a big presentation, or just a friend you’d love to grab a lunchtime coffee with, we’ve saved them a seat.

How to claim a pass for your mate:

  1. Choose a day during the week of August 10–14.

  2. Shoot our team a quick email with your friend’s full name and the date they’d like to join you.

  3. We’ll pop them on the guest list and have a desk (and a fresh brew) waiting for them!

Work is Better Together 💛

From Brad Neuberg’s original 2005 blog post to our coastal hubs in Berry and Coledale, the core truth of coworking has never changed: humans just work better when we’re together.

We can’t wait to welcome your favourite work pals into our spaces this August. See you at the desks!
