Kellie Scholte // Wealthy Wagtail

Kellie is the founder of Wealthy Wagtail, offering transparent and down to earth advice on all things mortgages and personal finance. Having recently become a mum, Kellie is all about work/life balance, and we are thrilled to have her as part of the WorkLife family.

Community and Background

Can you tell us a bit about your journey to the Picton community? How did you end up here and what attracted you to this community?

I was born and raised in the Macarthur community, living in Camden for most of my life. I moved away for a few years to experience the city life which was fun, of course, however have been drawn back to the Picton area to start my family and be involved in a small yet booming community! I feel at home in this little town and its surrounds, I adore the small coffee shops, the cold mornings, the beautiful nature and fresh air.

Business and Entrepreneurship

Tell us about your work. How and when did you decide to start it, and what motivated you to take the plunge into entrepreneurship or remote work?

I started my mortgage broking business just over a year ago, after spending 10 years in the finance industry and recognising a real gap in the market for genuine, down-to-earth, relationship-focused brokers—particularly ones who could support clients through big life transitions like buying their first home, renovating, or growing a family.

The decision to go out on my own came from a strong desire for flexibility and autonomy— not just in my professional life, but also personally, as I was preparing to become a new  mum. I wanted to build something sustainable that reflected my values: transparency, support, community connection, and long-term client care.

What does work-life balance look like for you? How do you manage the demands of work while ensuring time for family and personal life?

Work-life balance for me is about being intentional with my time and staying clear on my priorities. As a business owner and a new mum, my days are definitely full—but they’re also incredibly rewarding.

I’ve built Wealthy Wagtail Financial to support the kind of life I want to live: one where I can be present for my clients and for my family. That means setting clear boundaries, automating and streamlining as much as I can, and being realistic about what I can take on. I block out Fridays as a non-negotiable day off to recharge and spend quality time with my family, and I’m not afraid to say no to opportunities that don’t align with my long-term vision or values.

I also have big professional goals—like growing my business sustainably and settling $50 million in loans this year! But I’ve learned that I do my best work when I’m not stretched too thin. For me, it’s not about perfect balance every day, but about creating space across the week and month for both work and life to thrive.

It’s still a juggle at times, but having a clear sense of purpose in both roles makes it easier to manage. I also try to stay grounded by remembering why I started—freedom, flexibility, and making a real difference in people’s lives.

In your industry, what recent disruptions or transitions have had the most significant impact on your business?

One of the most significant disruptions in my industry recently has been the combination of rapid interest rate increases and tightening lender policies. These changes have dramatically shifted the borrowing landscape—reducing serviceability for many clients and increasing the complexity of loan structuring. As a broker, this means I’m doing more work behind the scenes to compare policies, find creative solutions, and educate clients on their changing options. However with the prediction of further decreases, I’m excited to see this positively impact clients existing financial situations & future plans!

Personal Life

Outside of work, what are your hobbies and passions? How do you like to spend your time when you’re not focused on business or family?

Outside of work and family, I really value creativity, connection, and time in nature. I love reading a good book, especially something that helps me grow or offers a fresh perspective. I also enjoy making art—nothing too serious, just creative expression for the joy of it. Whether it’s painting, sketching, or playing with design, I find it’s a beautiful way to unwind and stay inspired.

You’ll often find me swimming in the ocean—it’s my happy place and a non-negotiable when I need to reset. And when the sun is shining, I absolutely love a wine and cheese board with my favourite people, soaking up good conversation and laughter.

Are there any books or podcasts you’ve found particularly inspiring or informative recently? Any recommendations for the WorkLife community?

Yes! I’m always drawn to a good story—whether it’s a good true crime podcast or a beautifully written novel that transports you to another time. Lately, I’ve been loving true crime podcasts like They’re so engaging, and they really make you think about the human stories behind the headlines.  When it comes to books, I’m a big fan of mystery and period fiction.

How do you maintain boundaries between work and personal life? Any top tips?

I maintain work-life boundaries by setting clear work hours, blocking Fridays off for family time, and being upfront with clients about availability. I avoid checking emails after hours and schedule personal time—like ocean swims, reading, or art—just like work appointments. It’s about protecting my energy so I can show up fully for both my business and my family.

Home and Lifestyle

What is your taste like? Do you have a favourite item of furniture or object in your home? Anything that has special significance or tells a story about you?

I’d say my taste is modern/classic. My favourite object in my home is my big beautiful bed!

What do you like/appreciate about the design at WorkLife? Any favourite touches or things that make you feel at home when you are at work?

What I love most about WorkLife Picton is the way it blends history and character with modern functionality. The space has this classic, old-world charm—from the old staircase filled with plants to the original wooden features—that gives it a sense of warmth and story. You can really feel the history in the walls, which makes it so much more than just an office.

If you were to showcase the best of the local lifestyle to visiting friends, where would you take them and why?

I’d start with a walk through Botanic Gardens—it’s a peaceful, beautiful spot to slow down, breathe in some fresh air, and take in the natural beauty of the area.

Then I’d head to The George, especially in the cooler months. Sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine or a hearty meal feels so cosy —The building itself is full of history, just like Picton, and I love that blend of old and new, comfort and character.
